Photographs are vital and must include regular views but specifically must include close up views with regular profile view of specimen and with gill view of specimen next to specimens in natural environment location, in ONE picture similar to those photos on our Home Page. If not possible, photos of specimens on good light background and good lighting are ok. We recommend: a 35mm Camera / with 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 MD Zoom Lens and an additional set of “Sakar” Close-Up Lens Filters (x1 / x2 / x4) with x4 being the preferred viewing lens. Even without a Zoom Lens the Close-Up Lens Filters will drastically improve your photographs.

Each spore sample must be carefully collected to prevent contamination through the use of special plastic multi drawer file type containers. These can be obtained from us or at your local department store in the kitchen supplies area or at an office supply store (an example can be found on our Spore Bank Page). Each drawer or work area should be carefully wiped down with a 50% Water/Bleach mixture and or a 91% Isopropyl Alcohol, after each use, to clean and decontaminate the surface areas.

Care to collect specimens before rains or shortly after some drying has occurred will help prevent bacteria soaking into paper with spore prints. Excessively wet specimens require a little additional air ventilation by leaving drawers slightly open. However, the drawers appear to be adequately ventilated while closed and additional excessive venting can lead to terminal contamination of the Spore Samples. Don’t allow specimens to decay or melt but remove in time to protect spores. Use ONLY NEW paper preferably from small graph pads as they seem to result in cleaner print samples, for those samples with dark spore colors. Use colored construction paper for those specimens with cream and white spores. All samples need to be reasonably heavy as light prints are rejected by most customers. However we understand some specimens are difficult to acquire good prints from. Too heavy spore printing can also be a problem leading to caking, uncontrollability, contamination of the work area and loss.

Dates and air or soil temperatures during collection are necessary as well as info about surrounding plants and trees. Information about what the specimen was growing on is critical.

Dried specimens are not necessary but acceptable to assist in proper identification. Your edibility evaluation would be appreciated but not necessary. Please do not eat anything you have not identified.
